A Tasty Treat on Constitution Day

It’s not every day students at NVU-Lyndon get to enjoy a slice of pie and learn something, but last Tuesday wasn’t an ordinary day. September 17th was Constitution Day in the United States, and the Campus Activities Board (CAB) decided to celebrate with slices of pie and pocket-sized versions of the Constitution. This caught the attention of many students passing by during the event in the Alexander Twilight Theatre lobby.

“I never really paid attention to the Constitution, so they’re handing out books with fun facts about the U.S. Constitution . . . I think I’m actually going to read it and learn more about our Constitution” says student Lauren Cornell. That inspiration is what CAB was hoping for when they had the idea for this event. Alex Huff has been a general board member of CAB for the past year now and gave her thoughts about the event: “I think it’s really cool how, especially with a student body that you have to bribe with food, the fact that you’re bribing them with food to [tell them] hey, this is a day. I didn’t know it was Constitution Day.” This was the case with most of the student body. Many people who stopped in didn’t even know about Constitution Day.

CAB was expecting that most of the people who would stop in would only be there for pie, however, some of the students were there just to get a pocket-sized Constitution. “I’m actually really surprised by that, obviously with the exception of people who want to just participate and physically can’t eat pie or anything. But I did not expect that out of the student body” said Huff when told about these people. “That gives me a lot of hope that people just want to learn and want to be informed in stuff and have a genuine interest in how our country works.” This was the expectation of the student body, and people were genuinely interested in learning more about the constitution thanks to this event.

As for the pie, students had their choice between apple, Boston Crème, cherry, lemon meringue, and pumpkin pies. “I really like pie, and there’s some great Boston Crème pie. It’s really enjoyable” Cornell said while enjoying her piece of pie. Many students enjoyed the pie since there wasn’t any leftover when the event was over. CAB also received many comments on the event and how students enjoyed having something like this done on campus. With this information, CAB is planning on having similar events like this one in the future.
