CAB Meeting — September 25, 2018

The third Campus Activities Board meeting of the semester kicked off at 5:03 pm on September 25th. This meeting covered both recent events–including tie-dye—and the upcoming ones—such as the CAB Festival. The remainder of the meeting was focused on creating an event that will attract Johnson Students to Lyndon, and the potential conferences CAB would like to attend this academic year.

Before delving into event information, some of the CAB executive board members gave brief updates. Notable topics included: sending out an e-mail to club members to gauge interest in attending meetings, and if the meetings times should be changed; the success of Family Alumni Weekend, including Oktoberfest; and the need to push anyone who is interested in CAB to attend the meetings.

Past events included the comedian Marina Franklin on September 20th. The event hosted about 70 people and seemed to build off of Marina’s comedic interactions with the audience. The crowd grew as people texted their friends to show up—these friends would then text other friends until more and more people were coming in to experience Marina’s comedy.

Next was Family Alumni Weekend, with all of its various sub-events. BINGO was largely successful, with over 300 people attending—they even ran out of chairs, meaning some people had to sit on the floor to play. Students expressed the desire for more bingo and more opportunities to get out of their rooms and win stuff.  Sign-making, right after BINGO, had over 400 signs created. The whole setup was wonderful and students conveyed their enjoyment of the photo both and taking selfies with their signs.

Tie-dyeing occurred earlier on the 25th from 11 am until 1 pm. Despite the rain, CAB went through all four buckets of the tie-dye supplies. It was a popular event, with a large variety of things to tie-dye.

Upcoming events include CAB Festival on October 2nd from 11 am to 1 pm; fall break beginning October 6th; coffee, cookies, cocoa, and CAB on October 16th from 11 am to 1 pm; Illusionist Elliot Zimet on October 18th at 9 pm; and FrightFest at Six Flags on October 20th.

Brainstorming for a big event to draw Johnson students to the Lyndon campus of Northern Vermont University continued from the previous meeting. Some ideas included a joint trip somewhere, providing transportation so Johnson students could attend Lyndon BINGO, hosting a trivia/Kahoot/Jackbox game night, hosting a formal dance, or taking over a local bowling alley for Midnight Bowling.

Finally, discussion shifted to the topic of the upcoming conferences CAB would like to attend. This included National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Northeast in October, NACA Nationals in February, and Association for Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Northern in March. They’ve gone to NACA for the past five years or so, and Nationals would be very expensive, so the CAB members discussed their interest in attending APCA instead. APCA would allow them to bring more members, and would provide a different assortment of activities.

The meeting concluded at 5:27 pm.

CAB meets in the Rita Bole Community Room at 5 pm on Tuesdays. We hope to see you there! Visit the CAB Facebook page to learn more about upcoming events and how you can get involved.
