CAB Meetings — The First 4 Weeks of Spring 2019

The Campus Activities Board has been busy the first four weeks of the Spring semester. They’ve done numerous do-it-yourself events, taken students on trips, and showed their Hornet pride with green and gold. The first CAB General Board Meeting took place on Monday, January 28 at 7pm in the Rita Bole Community Room. The latest meeting was on February 11 at 7pm in the SALC Board Room on the second floor of Rita Bole.

In their first meeting, CAB addressed their goals for this semester. Largely this was to have a more active general board, to be more immersive to members, and to have more fun in general. They reminded attendees of CAB’s purpose to provide both cultural and educational activities for NVU students, and to have a good balance of events and activities. These could include DIY events, bus trips, de-stress events, and stuff during the open community hour.

The CAB executive board then introduced themselves and their roles. Currently, Sam Lesmerises serves as President, Chelsi Byrnes as Vice President, Danny Carniero as Secretary, Bryanna Smith as Advertising Coordinator, and Ben Iles as the Student Government Representative. After introducing themselves, they went on to focus on the roles the general board could have on campus, especially how they could help with events and on the CAB incentive program—discussed in more detail in a later meeting.

They wrapped up the meeting with a summary of past events, and a look towards future ones. During the first week of school, CAB held a few events for Winter Welcome Week. These included a Games and Cocoa event, DIY Fleece Blankets, a Spider-man Movie Night, and a trip to the Tanger Outlets. They also teased the possibility of larger trips later in the semester.

To start off their second meeting of the semester on February 4, the CAB executive board reviewed their most recent events as of that meeting. Their DIY Healthy Snack event was largely popular, with about 40 attendees. Comedian Michael Kent drew a crowd of around 60 attendees, and 31 people showed up to watch the Super Bowl in the Moore Community Room. After teasing more upcoming events and larger trips, they changed focus to their APCA trip. This Conference takes place on March 15 through March 17 and the floor was open to general board members who wished to attend, with a preference going to those members who would like to stay involved in future years.

Afterwards, the General Board Incentive Program was explained in greater detail. This is a point based system that allows for active members to earn reserved seats on trips, and potentially end-of-semester giveaways. The meeting concluded with an update from the latest SGA meeting—for more information, please read The Critic’s SGA Report.

Their latest meeting of the semester, on February 11, started with another review of recent events. The DIY Zen Gardens activity had about 75 attendees. Their Free Skate and Pizza event at the Fenton Chester Arena drew 95 people, making it one of the most popular events so far this semester.  In their upcoming events section, the focus was on the Spirit Day event to be held Wednesday, and the Valentines Photo Shoot on Thursday. Other upcoming activities include the DIY Succulents event on Tuesday, February 19, and the well-awaited school break starting February 25. More trips were teased, such as transportation to Johnson’s Casino Night, the trip to APCA, and a trip to New York City in March; a trip to the Drag Show at Johnson in April; and potential trips to either the NH Ice Castles or the Jay Peak WaterPark.

The meeting concluded with the reading of a student e-mail relating to the celebration of Black History Month. Those in attendance decided we should reach out to the student to see what ideas they had for events to hold, and see how CAB could assist in that venture.

The next CAB meeting will be held on Monday, February 18 at 7pm in the Bole Community Room. You can find more information about CAB’s upcoming events on their Facebook page. We’d love to see you there!
