Homecoming Weekend ’24 Recap – Day 2

On Saturday, September 28th, Homecoming Weekend was officially in full swing! Saturday held the bulk of events for the weekend, some of which include the ice cream social, the fall festival, the community lunch, a few games, and more.

The day started at 9 AM with a Lyndon Information Session in the Admissions Welcome Center. This is where people could register for an admissions presentation, a student run tour of campus, and even a question-and-answer session to learn about the University. At the same time, the Vail Museum right down the hall was open for people to browse through until 4 PM.

At 10 AM, the registration table was open once again for people to stop by for a schedule of events and a campus map. At 10:30, the Manor Vail Society held their annual meeting. The Manor Vail Society is a volunteer-based group of alumni. The Manor Vail Society was created to research and commemorate the history of Manor Vail.

At 11 AM, the 3rd Annual Mark O’Brien Alumni Basketball game started in the Stannard Gym. The Critic was unable to attend this game, but the Men’s Basketball Facebook page described it as “the most competitive game in recent years.”

The free Community Lunch started shortly after. Sodexo set up a few tables of food in Veteran’s Park. It was barbecue-style hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, and barbecue chicken with a couple options for salads and desserts. The Fall Festival was also held in Veteran’s Park where there were a few different lawn games set up. Unlike recent years, though, there was no bouncy house. Regardless, many alumni were found enjoying their time in Veteran’s Park during the Fall Festival.

Lyndon’s women’s tennis team held a match against Lesley University at 1 PM. The Critic was also unable to attend this, but according to the VTSU – Lyndon Hornet’s website, the Hornets got their first flight wins of the season but lost overall. Ella Huntington and Niyjah Wright defeated a Lesley duo in their first collegiate match. For a full recap of this game, you can read about it on the VTSU – Lyndon Hornet’s website.

During this, an ice cream social was being held in Veteran’s Park. This was a different location according to the VTSU website, but on the paper schedule it was listed as the correct location. It was scheduled to go until 3, but it seemed it was packed up earlier than that. For alumni whose graduation year ended in 4 or 9, this was also the time for their class reunion in the Burke Mountain Room.

At 3:30, the Men’s Soccer Team had a game against SUNY Delhi. Delhi had 46 total shots, 25 of which were at the net. Gilbert Flores of the Lyndon team got the only opportunity to make a shot but missed the net. Lyndon ended with 16 saves overall, all from our only goalkeeper D’Amecio Singleton. The gamed ended 10-0 in favor of Delhi.

The night wrapped up with the Alumni Bingo. There were 15 prizes up for grabs, including but not limited to a skateboard, a pots and pans set, cornhole boards, a beginner D&D set, and an engraved photo of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. The grand prize was an inflatable paddle board. This year, Alumni bingo was hosted by 2023 graduate, and former Editor-in-Chief of The Critic, Alex Huff. A new rule to Lyndon’s Bingo games is the ability to buy extra bingo boards for $1, giving people an extra chance to win. Compared to the bingos held for students throughout the year, this didn’t seem to be as popular.
