Indoor Rock Climbing Keeps Students Active in Winter

Northern Vermont University – Lyndon students have found a different outlet for staying fit in the winter. Open Sunday through Friday, 5:00PM-8:00PM, students visit the Gravity Well on campus to climb, boulder, belay, and more! The climbing wall is free for NVU-Lyndon students and faculty. Student employees will sign in visitors, hand out equipment, and show them the ropes—quite literally!

When asked about his experience in the rock wall, NVU-Lyndon senior Trevor Utton told The Critic, “The rock wall, to me, is a place where I can just unwind, climb, and enjoy the company of super chill people. Honestly, I think it is a hidden gem that not much of the student body knows about.

One can expect the Gravity Well to have a handful of visitors every day. New and experienced climbers all take turns climbing various sections of wall, even challenging each other to “add on” and speed competitions.

Annabelle Hipp, a freshman at NVU-Lyndon, stopped by to climb for the first time this past Wednesday. She admitted that the climb was “hard on my hands,” but Hipp plans on returning to conquer more of the designated paths.

The Gravity Well will be hosting a Mile High Club Climbing Party this coming Wednesday, March 13. The event starts at 4:00PM and will last until 9:00PM, extending the rock wall’s normal hours. Pizza, music, and games are planned.

Lyndon’s sister school, Northern Vermont University – Johnson, will also be holding a rock climbing event in the near future. Johnson’s climbing wall, on May 3, will be hosting a bouldering competition!
