Before the storms hit Vermont, a night of comedy came to the Alexander Twilight Theatre on Thursday, November 8, 2018. Comedian Irene Tu, of Seeso’s “Take My Wife” and VICELAND’s “Funny How?” fame, came to alleviate the stress of oncoming exams with her jokes.
In a not-so-packed theater, Irene Tu brought the laughs by digging in to her own life and experiences. It was a short set, that began a little after the 9 o’clock start, lasting until 10 in the evening, but it had the majority of the crowd roaring with laughter the entire time. Irene walked the stage with the confidence of an experienced comic, feeling comfortable in her second appearance at the school.
No hot topics were off-limits on this night of raunchy comedy. From being gay, to her issues in airport security, many of her jokes came from her life experiences. Early on in her life, she owned Barbie dolls that she refused to put clothes on. This hit home with much of the crowd, sending them into fits. The relatable edge to her comedic style is what hit the funny bone of the audience. Did you know she has trouble at the airport because she looks like a young Asian boy?
Her crowd work was what made her really engaging. During several stops in her set, she involved the audience, asking them what they’re studying, how they’re doing, and stopping to talk whenever someone would react to one of her stories (which is considered heckling, but she didn’t mind).
Overall, it was a fun night of free comedy for the students of NVU-Lyndon. Irene Tu is a wonderful comedian on the rise in the San Francisco area, and we hope to have her back in the future. Here’s to more entertaining nights of comedy at Lyndon!
