Lyndon Women’s Soccer Victorious

The Northern Vermont University – Lyndon Hornets have had a busy start to their respective sports seasons. Yesterday, on September 8, the women’s soccer team won their first game of the season against Mitchell College with a complete shutout. Both teams stepped onto the field with a season record of 0-3-0, but it was Lyndon who came out on top with a score of 5-0. Their new season record stands at 1-4-0 with eleven games remaining.

The first half was drawn out, both teams’ defenses and offenses proving to be good matches for each other. Lyndon freshman Teagan Carpenter (13) scored the first goal of the game twelve minutes in.

The second half began with high energy. Off of a corner kick from freshman EmmaLee Smith (7), junior Kelsey Jacobs (23) headed the ball into the back of the net. It was a picture-perfect play that motivated the team. The Lyndon Hornets started moving faster and more in sync. The communication and energy radiating from the team was upbeat and empowering.

Thirteen minutes later, Lyndon junior Riley Patterson (25) scored a goal. The ball was teetering on the goal line with Lyndon and Mitchell players swarming it, but she was able to make the final kick with seven minutes remaining.

Other Lyndon players started to feel left out of the scoring trend, so sophomore Kelsey Holland (11) took a successful shot two minutes later. The score sat at a solid 4-0, Lyndon’s defense staying strong and unified on their home field.

The game was thought to be over when, seven seconds before the buzzer, Junior EmmaLee Smith (7) scored the team’s fifth goal of the season. Michaela Columbia (3) assisted on this and an earlier goal.

Eleven other shots were made but saved by Mitchell’s Drew Johndrow (00). Lyndon’s own goalie, Lauren Young (00) is recorded to have prevented at least two shots on goal. The entire NVU – Lyndon team played together very well, united on their home turf. Both defense and offense were powerful, energetic, and patient with the afternoon contest.

With a fresh win, the women’s soccer team is sure to see more success in the season, especially on their home turf. The team stands on Varsity Field undefeated with more contests approaching.
