Men’s Soccer Struggle to Conquer Friday the 13th

In their fifth game of the season, Northern Vermont University – Lyndon’s Men’s Soccer team stepped onto the varsity field last Friday, September 13, with only one goal in mind—win. They faced off against Rivier University during this contest. Unfortunately, the curse of Friday the 13th took advantage of the Hornets as they were defeated 0-4.

The first half started in a ten-minute stalemate. Both teams had similar possession times, shots on goal, and defensive strategies that gave no room for error. Rivier, however, started to push the limits little by little, almost scoring a goal with twenty minutes remaining. They were able to score a goal in the first half thanks to Rivier junior Fred Kazalski (31) in the last nine minutes.

Students and fans on the sidelines witnessed this as a turning point for Lyndon. While the Rivier players celebrated their goal, the Hornets became just as energetic with vengeance. They wanted to return the favor. Though the opponents maintained control for the rest of the half, the Hornets showed no weakness and held their ground, keeping the score 0-1 for the first half. Fans described the last ten seconds as “a large game of pinball,” though more carefully thought out and precise by all players on the field.

After halftime, which consisted of water breaks and coach meetings, the teams stepped onto the field reenergized. Kazalski (31) ended up scoring once again within the first ten minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Rivier freshman Kelvin Cortex (16) would then follow suit with a penalty kick against Lyndon junior Caleb Derbyshire (88) with less than twenty minutes remaining in the game. Only seconds later, Cortez (16) would slip the final goal of the game past Derbyshire (88) before Lyndon shut them out.

To keep the ball in Lyndon’s control, senior Chris Trifilio (27) can be seen showing off his footwork.

Though four goals escaped his clutches, Derbyshire (88) and Lyndon’s defense were able to stop 15 other shots towards the goal. Derbyshire (88) is credited with six saves during the game.

Even though Lyndon lost, 0-4, everyone left the field in good spirits. It was a genuinely good game that fans thoroughly enjoyed, especially since there’s a win waiting for the Hornets.
