Now A Word From Our Alumni: Shane Covey

I had finished off eight beers while watching the Super Bowl in my 2nd-floor room when the fire alarm went off. I wanted to hide under my bed, but my new friends thankfully helped me down the stairs and outside my dorm.

That’s my only LSC party story. After that, I usually spent my nights playing poker in our suite, shooting hoops at the gym, or reading something written by Shakespeare.

The truth is, I went to Lyndonville in hopes of becoming a sportswriter after my sister advised me to give it a shot.

My favorite part about writing for The Critic was coming up with a nickname for every intramural athlete. Lisa Hammond is the exception (she talked me into going with Ham and Cheese).

Intramural basketball was a blast. Were we the only team to smoke cigars right before games?

I also enjoyed trips to Casino de Montreal, playing the Murder game on campus, eating at the diner, throwing the football around with my roomie Keith, and my internship at the Lyndon Independent.

Does anyone else remember Mark Campbell’s impersonation of Mr. Dixon or the one Joe Veres did of Forrest Gump?

It’s hard to believe that that Super Bowl party took place 28 years ago.

Since earning my degree, I’ve been the sports editor for two different newspapers, currently working in my hometown for the Brattleboro Reformer.
