Halloween festivities were in full swing this past Halloweekend, October 26-28th as students and residents participated in various events and competitions that took place all over campus to promote safe Halloween fun.
On Friday October 26th, Resident Assistant Ben Lalonde, and Resident Assistant Erica Hayakawa held a Mummy Wrap competition in the Theatre lobby. This event was part of Halloweekend at the school, and was open to all residents and students on the NVU-Lyndon campus.
This is the first year this event has been held. It has really helped students interact with the RA’s and have fun. Resident Assistant Ben Lalonde agreed: “It is a way for students to get involved and make new friends as well as get to know the RA’s on campus.”
A Mummy Wrap competition takes at least two people. One person is the Mummy, and the other person uses toilet paper to quickly wrap their partner up like a mummy without ripping the toilet paper. William Archer a junior came to participate in the fun. “I might as well do something crazy while I’m here, I’m not the kind of guy who parties and drinks so this is controlled chaos,” Archer said.
Events like the Mummy Wrap are held on campus so they are accessible to all students who want to come. “It allows me to interact with residents and potentially create friendships,” Lalonde said. The Mummy wrap competition had candy bag prizes for all residents who came to play.
Following the Mummy Wrap competition, the Rez Hall Crawl took place October 26th from 7 pm – 2 am. The Rez hall crawl was a trick or treating event that took place in every residence hall on campus: Stonehenge, Wheelock, and Rita Bole. This event was open to all on campus residents. A Resident Assistant was in each hall handing out candy and giving a sticker to the resident after they trick-or treated from them. If the resident went to all five building they were entered into a drawing to win a big prize.
This event allowed students to dress up and stay on campus. “They get free candy, and they get to visit RA’s who are dressed up. It provides students with a safe environment of being on campus, and not making bad decisions,” Polonia said. This was the first year the Rez hall Crawl was held on campus and many students showed up to participate and have fun even in the chilly weather. Lynsee Garfield, a resident on campus, dressed as Wanda from Timmy Turner and trick-or treated at every residence hall during the event. “I try getting really involved in the campus, and this was another thing, I also like candy,” Garfield said. This event allowed residents to meet other on-campus residents and get familiar with other Resident Assistant on campus. “You meet a variety of people when doing these things, and it’s an icebreaker to break the awkwardness,” Garfield said.
Students were dressed up eating candy and playing pool in the lounge after they finished going around to each residence hall. It looked like a fun and stress-free atmosphere, where students were laughing and having fun with friends.
These were just a couple of the fun and safe events put on by the Resident Assistants over the Halloweekend. There are hopes it will become an annual weekend of fun for the campus. All students are encouraged to attend and participate in the spooky fun offered.
