NVU Students Celebrate “Pi Day”

On Thursday, March 12, the students of Northern Vermont University were able to celebrate “Pi Day” with a delicious assortment of pie. Thanks to NVU’s Spirit Squad, students on both the Johnson and Lyndon campuses were able to participate in Thursday’s Community Hour festivity. Co-chair of the NVU Spirit Squad Tracy Sherbrook explained that yesterday’s “Pi Day” celebration was just the first step of doing “in tandem events at each campus.”

“Pi Day” is a day for mathematics. People celebrate the indefinite circumference of a circle (3.14159…) which is represented by the Greek letter “π” (Pi). “Pi Day” is traditionally celebrated on March 14 which was decided by the first three numbers of the circumference, 3.14. NVU students celebrated the day on March 12 as “Pi Day” falls on a Saturday this year.

Pies were located in offices across campus which included Academic Support, Admissions, Student Services, and various faculty offices. Pie was also located in the Alexander Twilight Theater Lobby where the Commencement Fair was taking place. There was a piece of pie for anyone who wanted one because each administrative office had its own unique spread of pies. Students could travel around and try different slices of pie in search of the perfect one. Dozens of students were seen eating different kinds of pie.

NVU-Lyndon student Ken Niemann stated that today’s “Pi Day” celebration made him “happy because [he] likes sweets.”

When asked how it makes her feel to see students walking around with pie, Sherbrook laughed and said, “I hope they’re very happy.” Students can look forward to more Community Hour events like “Pi Day” that will be occurring later in the spring.
