Students who ventured out last night for an evening snack at the Hornet’s Nest were caught by surprise when they passed by an Open Mic happening right next door in the Student Center hosted by Vermont drag queen Emoji Nightmare. While some continued on their way, eleven students stayed for the show, cheering on their peers who performed in various forms.
The night started with Malcolm Van Couvering reading poetry, followed by Emoji Nightmare hosting four rounds of mini spelling bees for students to compete against their friends. Alek Wolfe performed three songs throughout the night, followed by Tyler Silveira and Max Vandiver’s rendering of “The Alphabet Song” and Erica Shea and Jessy Hart’s final performance of “Satisfied” from Hamilton.
Wolfe said he only discovered the open mic event on Tuesday and immediately knew he had to perform. “We’ve all missed the idea of doing stuff in-person,” he admitted. “[And] when you add the idea of music or other art, it adds to the experience.”
This was the second “Open Mic” event held on the Lyndon campus this semester, the first being hosted by poet Elisabeth Horan on September 15. When asked if he would attend a similar event, Wolfe told The Critic it would depend on the time of the open mic and if he was struck by inspiration.
