The fifth SGA meeting of the spring semester took place on April 7th at 8:03pm in the Moore Community Room (ASAC 100) and virtually via Zoom. The meeting was also live-streamed on the SGA’s Facebook page.
Student Body Comments
Jamie Struck, the designer of the disc golf course, spoke to announce his findings from his recent evaluation of the course. He says that it’s been well-maintained over the years, but there are still a few minor changes that could be made to improve it. The work would only take a week, maybe a week and a half at the most, to complete.
Struck wrote up a 13-page report on his findings that was emailed to SGA members. In the report, Struck listed immediate maintenance and other recommendations to the course.
When asked why one of the recommendations was additional concrete slabs, or T-pads, closer to the baskets, Struck said it was a suggestion to make the course a little easier. There is lots of freedom for the players to decide where they start their game that makes the change less of a requirement.
In other student body comments, a question came up as to why the COVID testing sessions were moved in the middle of the semester. Jonathan Davis answered that it was because of the lack of tests being taken on Sundays. Athletes are required to test 3 times a week and have trouble getting access to tests on Sundays, so the days had to be adjusted to better accommodate their schedule.
In light of an announcement from Governor Scott regarding the gathering restrictions planning to be loosened to 900 people in July, Davis doubled down on the university’s plans to keep their current social distancing policies in place for the near future.
Reports & Presentations
For the financial report, the available funds are $56,939 and the total amount is $83,388.02.
A reminder was also made for clubs to finish assembling their club bulletin boards by April 14th. The bulletin boards are being hung in the hallway between Public Safety and the Hornet’s Nest.
President Gill MacDonald then went over some of the recommendations that were given to update the SGA’s constitution. These include adding a policy & procedure document, an emergency clause, and a singular statement for the executive board’s commitment to abide by the constitution to reduce redundancy.
Discussion & Action Items
For the student activity budget, the SGA is currently consulting with Lyndon FAIR about the plans to hang a Black Lives Matter (BLM) and pride flag on campus. This is to make sure that the people potentially being represented by these flags are being represented properly.
As for the outdoor space, an idea was pitched to put money toward some Adirondack chairs that can be moved anywhere on campus. If wooden ones were chosen, then they could be painted by the student body as a way to bring some art outdoors.
Other Business
In the last VSCSA meeting, Lyndon stood out as the only school in the system that was holding their SGA board elections. Those results are available on the SGA’s website. MacDonald and Katie Flannigan were reelected for their positions as President and Executive Vice President respectively. Renee Chaples was elected as a Class Representative for the Class of 2023, and Patrick Wickstrom was elected as Financial Controller. Jasmyn Wilkinson was also reelected as a Class Representative for the Class of 2024. Joining her from the Class of 2024 will be Ariel Day. There was no Administrative Vice President chosen.
President Collins made a statement about the availability of hoods and LSC commemorative diplomas. Hoods are available to order via calling the bookstore, and the commemorative diplomas will be made available later on in the semester for the graduating students.
For Spring Day updates, the table arrangements and times were finalized. Clubs with activities and tables reserved must arrive at 10:30am to set up, and activities will start at 11am on both days.
