The third SGA meeting of the semester took place on March 4 at 8:03 pm in the Moore Community Room (ASAC 100). As per usual, the meeting was live-streamed on the SGA’s Facebook page, so go check it out if you missed it!
During Student Body Comments, a request was made to consider letting NVU-Lyndon have Town Meeting Day off since other schools in the area have that day off as well. Then concerns were raised about the coronavirus and how some students are worried about it spreading through campus. Particularly, the question was brought up of whether the school has a plan in place in the chance that the illness spreads to campus. Erin Rossetti confirmed that plans are being worked on to handle a possible outbreak and the staff is in contact with the Department of Health. A couple of complaints were then brought up. The first was about some staff in Student Services adamantly referring to a student by the wrong pronouns and names, and the student being uncomfortable with working with the department as a result. The next was about the Dining Hall closing too early for some students since some classes run too late to allow them to get dinner there. Furthermore, another comment was made about the Dining Hall, specifically regarding how they don’t offer good meat-free meals during Lent.
Mike Secreti presented the financial update in Patrick Wickstrom’s absence. There hasn’t been any change in the general fund at $11,592.11, but the overall total has changed to $29,593.28 as materials are bought for Spring Day and other events. Then, the Sports Medicine club came up for a funding request. They asked for $1,500 to fund a few CPR/AED and Basic Life Support courses. The classes will be open to the student body in a first-come, first-serve fashion, though priority will be given to medical students who need these certifications for their continued education. The request passed with a majority vote.
The Student Activities Account was briefly updated. Toby Stewart’s office is still crunching numbers, and a meeting has been requested with him in the next two weeks to understand his team’s findings.
In other business, March 19 is the open forum date with the 2020-2021 candidates for the SGA Executive Board. If you have any concerns or questions about running for the Executive Board or amending the SGA Constitution, get in contact with any of the current SGA Executive Board.
The 10% Committee is working on getting tissues in more areas on campus, as brought up at the last SGA meeting in Student Body Comments, as well as free feminine products in the bathrooms.
On March 17, Student Life will be holding a Housing Info & Deposit Party at Student Services. This will be an opportunity for students to pay their housing deposit early.
The Twilight Players also announced the titles of their shows for next year; “The Country Wife” will be performed in the Fall 2020 semester and “Reefer Madness” will be in the Spring 2021 semester.
The meeting concluded at 9:17 pm. The next meeting will be on March 18, same time and place as always. We hope to see you there!
