SGA Meeting – October 30, 2019

The fifth SGA meeting of the year took place at 8:05 pm on October 30 in the Moore Community Room (ASAC 100). As per usual, the meeting was streamed live on The Critic’s Facebook page, so check that out if you missed the meeting!

In the student body comments portion of the meeting, a concern was brought up about the rolling hotdog machine in the Dining Hall going missing. Patrick said he would talk to Jonathan Davis about it. Concerns were also brought up about the small number of therapists on duty at the Brown House, and the subsequent waiting times/lines growing as a result. The representative for the Twilight Players mentioned that the Burke Mountain Room, where a lot of their meetings occur, has a problem with dead flies building up.

For reports and presentations, President Elaine Collins came in to answer questions for students. She brought up her chain of command in the office. First is Nolan Atkins, the Provost and the one to address any academic concerns, then Sharron Scott, Dean of Administration and the one to ask any financial questions, then Jonathan Davis, Dean of Students and the leader of Student Affairs, then Michael Fox, Dean of Enrollment and the one to contact about dual-enrollment and graduation, and finally Leah Hollenberger, the leader of the Development and Alumni Relations department. Any problems that cannot be solved by these people should be then sent to Elaine herself. Michael Fox also had a special request to have anyone interested in being a student ambassador come and visit the Admissions office.

The board meets every few weeks to discuss issues and come to a collective agreement for said issues. Any issues that can’t be decided on are executively addressed by Elaine. She has been trying to make more efforts to build good relationships with students by showing up for more informal occasions. She has been spending time in the Dining Hall, so keep your eyes peeled for her next time you go there!

Finally, she talked about the upcoming State of the University Address and gave a small preview of what will be discussed. It will be held on November 7 at 11:30 am in the Moore Community Room.

Next, Patrick gave his financial update. The available amount for requests through the SGA is $27,743.21, and the total budget is $56,293.21.

Afterward, the executive board for the proposed LyndonHEIM club came up to present on why they should be voted in as an official club. President Elijah Clark explained the purpose and definition of LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) and the basics of how the club would function. The club proposal was passed thanks to a majority vote.

Next, AMS presented a budget proposal for them to attend the AMS Student Conference this year. The conference allows Atmospheric Science students to network and build relationships that could lead to future internships or even employment, as well as help them pinpoint where exactly they want to go in their career paths. The request was for scholarships for active members of the AMS club to attend the conference, with the requirements that they have attended at least half of all their meetings and attended 6 or more events. With registration for 10 students costing $60 each, the total budget proposal was $600. Members will be required to submit an application for a scholarship, and the executive board will not be allowed to apply. The request passed with a majority vote.

In other business, Ben sent out a reminder for people to apply for positions on the SGA exec board, and to contact Mike Secreti if you are interested. The Administrative Vice President position is open, as well as all of the class representative roles. Patrick announced that HOPE will be visiting at the next meeting to explain their organization and what they do.

Finally, club and committee updates were made. CAB will hold Family Feud at 8 pm on November 5, and Open Mic Night at 8 pm on November 7. Gaming Club had a record turnout for their annual 24-hour event last week.

On November 9, The Twilight Players will be holding the annual Dance Recital, so keep an eye out for posters! The Critic is working on two big projects: the Lyndon Alphabet and the NVU-Lyndon Bucket List. If you are interested in contributing to these projects and have any ideas, contact Alexandra Huff.

The meeting concluded at 9:20 pm. The next meeting will take place on November 13, same time and same place. We hope to see you there!
