SGA Meeting – September 11th, 2024

On Wednesday, September 11th, the Lyndon SGA held its second meeting of the school year in the new weekly format.  Overall, the meeting touched on a few different topics.

First, Director of Student Activities Matt Patry visited the Lyndon campus to promote a university leadership retreat to the Johnson Campus the first weekend of October. The retreat is officially open to student government members, but club leaders and other student leaders may be allowed to attend if availability allows. Students will learn about different leadership tactics from a speaker who will be announced later. The cost of this speaker has been covered by President Bergh. Students who attend will not have to pay for lodging, attendance, or meals. Meals will be covered by the SGA budget.

Second, the 10% Committee has a chance to return since the disbandment of the committee over the summer. However, it was announced that the Committee could be recreated, either as a club or as an ad hoc committee through the SGA Congress. If the Committee were to be recreated as a club, it would have to follow all club procedures, including requesting funds from the financial board. However, if the SGA Congress creates an ad hoc committee through the bylaws, then the new 10% Committee can be given their funds directly from the SGA budget, circumventing the financial board and restoring the Committee nearly to its previous form from last semester.

It was also mentioned that the VTSU Bylaws have not yet been passed. This means they will need to be revisited and are not yet an official document for SGA. Patry recommends trying to follow the bylaws despite this. Following bylaws as they are now will prevent the SGA from creating a system that is completely different from what the bylaws say once they are passed.

Finally, the SGA Congress is holding special elections to fill empty positions in their executive board. Applications are due at 11:59 PM on September 20th, and voting will begin on September 23rd.
