Student Government Elections 2024 – What’s Different?

Dean of Students Jamia Danzy emailed students Tuesday, March 12th announcing that SGA elections for all campuses were starting up. However, due to the proposed new constitution, the election this year is looking a bit different than normal.

Students are running for positions that do not exist per Lyndon’s current SGA constitution. These are all positions that are currently in the proposed VTSU SGA Constitution. This constitution has been worked on for several months across all VTSU campuses. It is an effort made to combine us all under one SGA, while still giving each campus the liberties needed for it to function properly for their campus.

You will notice that the positions in the proposed constitution are not anything Lyndon has seen before. There are some similarities to the positions we currently have, but there are a multitude of new positions.

The Positions

There are 29 positions proposed by the VTSU SGA Constitution, but not every position is elected.  Only 20 of these positions are positions that are elected. All other positions are appointed, with the exception being General Member. Every student at VTSU is automatically a General Member of SGA.

The Elected positions for CONGRESS include:

  1. President
  2. Executive Vice President
  3. Secretary of Academics
  4. Secretary of Administration
  5. Secretary of Campus Activities
  6. Secretary of Community Relations
  7. Secretary of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  8. Secretary of Sustainability
  9. Secretary of Wellness
  10. Deputy Secretary of Administration
  11. Deputy Secretary of Community Relations
  12. Treasurer
  13. Clerk of Congress
  14. Delegate

The Elected positions for the CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD include:

  1. Deputy Secretary of Campus Activities
  2. Chair of Advertising
  3. Chair of Social Media
  4. Chair of Traditions
  5. CAB Clerk

The only elected position in the SENATE is a senator.

The rest of the positions are non-elected.

The Breakdown

Applications for SGA Positions are open currently. Campaigning will begin on April 1st, and Elections will officially begin on April 15th. There will be four days of voting, and the results will be announced by April 22nd.

For those interested in running for any position, you will need to fill out this application. It requires a signature from a department faculty for your major, an SGA member, and a student life professional staff member. On top of these three signatures, you will need 20 from the student body.

Those who have questions or concerns should meet with the current SGA Executive Board or Elizabeth Sousa during their office hours.
