On the weekend of April 23-25, the NVU-Lyndon AMS chapter held the Northeastern Storm Conference. For the first time, the conference was held remotely instead of its usual spot in Saratoga Springs, New York. Those attending who live on-campus were able to go to the Moore Community Room and join for the in-person feel.
This year’s conference was held on the platform of Whova, which is a platform made to hold virtual events. Using this platform, attendees and guest speakers were able to create community discussions to interact with each other and talk about meteorology, weather, and climate change. The site also includes Networking Tables in which everyone attending was able to meet up with others in a virtual setting.
Another big part of this year’s NESC was the professional development segment. This segment was new to the conference this year and helped attendees build resumes and learn tips on how to interview. This created opportunities that other storm conferences usually don’t have when they are in-person. Matt Condon, the AMS Public Relations Officer, said that “at the end of the conference, there was a lot of positive feedback regarding the professional development segment.” This new segment now will be included for conferences to come.
