The Bole Gym was not as active as hoped. Broomball was the activity of the night on Thursday, March 21. Only the members of the Campus Activities Board showed up, including one of their general board members, Kelsey Emery; not all was lost. While waiting and hoping that a few would show, the members started playing instead. It started out with two CAB members, Mike Secreti, the clubs advisor and John Currier, a general board member. They messed around with the ball for a bit and then the other two members joined, Kelsey Emery and Dan Careiro, the secretary of the club, for a fun relaxed game; no seriousness, just laughs.
For those of you who do not know what broomball is, with a little research, the CAB members were right, “it is a game very similar to hockey in its formation and rules, but also incorporates some soccer strategies,” according to the website usabroomball.com. Overall, the laughs and just having fun lasted about forty minutes. It started at 8pm and ended at 9:10pm. The event was supposed to go on for a hour or so, but because no students showed, the time was cut short.
Before we all parted ways, I talked to one of them about how the night went for them. A quick chat with just a few questions for Emery started with, “Did you have fun?” She simply stated, “Yes.” I also asked, “Was this your first time playing broomball?” Emery told me, “The cab event was my first time playing broom ball, yes. I have played other intramural like sports but not for years.” Which led to my next two questions, “If so, or in general, do you think broomball is fun?” Emery said, “Yes … [it is a] way to let out stress.” My last question for her was, “What is your favorite part of broomball?” Emery replied again saying, “Letting out stress … [and] having fun.”
Having a small group is not always a bad thing; everyone had a fun time. Everyone who showed up is a great part of the Lyndon campus. When talking to Careiro when I first arrived at the gym, we discussed the background and what types of projects this club brings to the Lyndon community, besides the one I attended on Thursday night. Careiro told me about their live events, which are events that include magicians or comedians. “We also have hypnotists and mentalists on occasion.” There is also an event that happens during the end of the semester. “Our Destress fest happens every semester on the Tuesday before finals week. We have an oxygen bar, massage chairs, and DIY air fresheners,” Careiro explained. Sounds very relaxing. It’s nice that students can take a weight off their shoulders with a massage.
College is supposed to be full of excitement and that’s what CAB does and did on Thursday night. Even though the event did not go as hoped, laughter was present, so that’s a win.
