On Saturday, September 26, the NVU-Lyndon women’s soccer celebrated Senior Day with a game against SUNY Delhi. Before the start of the game, they celebrated seniors Eleanor Harrington (4) and Jessica Hillman (8). The game ended in an 8-0 decision in favor of the visiting Broncos.
The game started extremely aggressively as both teams went to the ball hard. It was SUNY Delhi that ended up gaining control of the ball, Brianna Laing (13) shooting a ball past Hornet goalie Lauren Young (0) ten minutes into the game. Exactly ten minutes later, she was followed by Bronco teammate Alexa DuBois (11).
DuBois also scored the first goal of the second half against Lyndon goalie Victoria McCormack (1). With the sun directly in their eyes, it was harder for the defense to prevent oncoming shots from the Broncos. DuBois’ goal was followed by two goals from Reanen Goodspeed (3) in fifteen minutes. The Hornets were able to hold off the Broncos for a bit, before Samantha Acuna (10), Kelsey Innes (2), and Alexa Scaglione (25) all scored in five minutes with only minutes remaining, finishing the game 8-0 in favor of SUNY Delhi.
Together, Young and McCormack saved seventeen other possible goals against the Hornets, while the Lyndon defense rallied to prevent twenty other balls from reaching the red-clad goalies. The Hornets fought hard in this bought, despite the loss, and walked off the field with their heads held high.
The women’s soccer team faces their final opponents in a home match against the University of Maine – Farmington on Tuesday, September 29 at 2:30 PM in a NAC Conference game. We hope to see other Hornets and community members at the field, supporting our athletes for their final contest of the 2019 season.
