Women’s Soccer – Lyndon vs. Curry

Following their home contest against Mitchell on Saturday, the Northern Vermont University – Lyndon women’s varsity soccer team was back at it again today against Curry College. Curry had a season record of 2-1-0 while the Lyndon Hornets stepped onto the field with a record of 1-3-0. Both teams are young, consisting of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

It was, however, the visiting team that found victory on Varsity Field. Curry held possession of the ball for most of the game, though the Lyndon defense held strong. The first shot was made over twenty-five minutes into the game by Curry sophomore Tayla Randall (9). Seconds later, Curry senior Shae Breslin (12) snuck past Lyndon freshman goalie Lauren Young (00) with yet another goal. Once again, Lyndon defense rallied and kept the ball out of the net. With forty-one seconds remaining of the half, one more shot was scored by Sarah Stearns (25), a Curry freshman.

The second half began with a score of 0-3 favoring Curry. Lyndon came back with more force and energy. The ball was in Lyndon’s possession more and spent time in the opponent’s half of the field. Curry took fewer shots as both offensive and defensive Lyndon players put the pressure on.

However, it was Curry that sealed the victory in the end with two more goals from freshman Lauren Clapper (1) and sophomore Sarah McGrath (14). These were scored with sophomore Lyndon goalie Victoria McCormack (01) in the net.

Although the game ended in a 0-5 loss, the game proved to be a good lesson and it was well fought. There were over forty shots taken by Curry that were prevented by Lyndon’s defensive lineup. Young was in goal for thirty of these shots and McCormack saw ten that weren’t made. The shots were prevented not only by the goalies, but the ladies in the back of the field.

Lyndon junior Kelsey Jacobs (23) can be credited for many of the blocks and stealing the ball from offensive Curry players. She had fans from the other team talking about her in the stands, and rightfully so. The score would have been much different without her on the field.

The Lyndon team also stayed united throughout the game. Not once did they become verbally frustrated and turn on each other, a star bound quality that will get them far as the soccer season continues. Their next game is against Thomas College (Maine) on September 15. This will be hosted on NVU – Lyndon’s Varsity Field, right behind the S.H.A.P.E. center. We hope to see you there! Go Hornets!
