Women’s Volleyball Drops Saturday’s Tri-Match

On Saturday, September 7, Northern Vermont University – Lyndon hosted three women’s volleyball games. Lyndon faced off against sister school Northern Vermont University – Johnson to kick off the night, followed by a matchup between Johnson and Mitchell College, and finished with a Lyndon versus Mitchell game. The Hornets lost both contests against Johnson and Mitchell, resulting in a 0-6 season record so far. The Lyndon Hornet’s North Atlantic Conference record sits at 0-1.

Lyndon and Johnson both sought victory in the first game of the night as the teams stepped onto the court at 1:00 PM. Johnson served and kept control of the ball for the majority of the first set, which ended 5-25 in favor of the Badgers.

As the second set began in control of the Lyndon Hornets, junior Vanessa Soares (3) started to show more energy and enthusiasm. She spiked the ball shortly after Johnson took control, which helped rally the Hornets together. The rest of the set ensued with a lot more smiles, although the Badgers still came out on top with a final score of 2-25. Fans attest, however, that although the score was lower, this set was more fun to watch—everyone got more into it with Soares’ infectious energy.

Finally, the third set started in Johnson’s hands. They kept control for most of the match, but started to see more push back from the Hornets as the game continued. The Hornets were still unable to defeat the Badgers and lost 5-25.

The Badgers left the court with a 3-0 set win over Lyndon.

At 5:30, the Lyndon Hornets stepped back onto the court for their second game of the night against the Mitchell College Mariners. Lyndon served to start the first set and worked to keep that control early on. Mitchell rallied together towards the middle and end, however, and won the set with a 5-25 showing.

Unlike the first, the second set did not match the earlier game against Johnson. The Hornets were able to work together for more points and end the set with a score of 4-25, still in Mitchell’s favor.

The last set was arguably the best of the night. The Hornets were pumped and craved a win. Under their serve, the Hornets scored the first point of the set. The set’s back and forth control was more spread out as both teams scored throughout. The set ended with a score of 6-25, giving Mitchell the win.

Mitchell remained victorious with a 3-0 set win against the Hornets.

The NVU-Lyndon’s Women’s Volleyball team will host Castleton University this Saturday, September 14 in the Stannard Gymnasium. The game is set to start at 12:00 PM (noon). Go Hornets!
