Hornets Struggle to Score on Anna Maria

Lyndon hosted Anna Maria College last night for a non-conference match. Neither team had a win on their record for the season yet, but it was the Hornets who once again fell 0-3 in their eighth game of the season.

In the first set of the game, the Hornets stayed right on the visiting AMCATS’s heels. The first few points were back and forth as both teams got used to the pace of the game. Anna Maria would then grow a point gap through Lyndon’s net balls, 9-2 in their favor. The Hornets rallied, taking the AMCATS by surprise and increasing their score 9-5. AMCATS senior Bella Kozciak (#14) hit a vicious kill to bring Anna Maria back in control, growing the gap once more. The Hornets got a few out-of-bounds points scattered throughout the rest of the game and came together for a surprise attack at the end, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting AMCATS took the set 25-11.

Lyndon sophomore Calysta Lohman (#9) started the second set serving. Her first three serves instantly scored points for the Hornets. But great saves from the AMCATS on the fourth serve kept the ball in the air long enough for the Hornets to make a mistake, giving the visitors control once again. Anna Maria favored control for a majority of the set, ending in a score of 25-9, which would be the Hornets’ lowest point tally of the night.

Coming off that loss, Lyndon tried to keep pace with Anna Maria in the beginning minutes. But as the point gap once again started to grow, 7-3, the home team was taking it hard. Lyndon’s interim head coach, Courtney Novak, called a timeout, giving Lyndon the time they needed to recollect themselves. Although the gap continued to grow, the Hornets were on the court with smiles on their faces, lifting each other up as they played on. Lyndon would score a few more times in the set, but it was a short serve that ended the game, 25-12 for the AMCATS.

The Hornets’ performance was consistent through the night, averaging just over ten points per set. This, however, is a lower average than last season where Lyndon averaged 13 points against the AMCATS. Lohman (#9) led with four kills and five aces throughout the night, catching up to Anna Maria’s scoreboard when possible. Fellow sophomore Seairra Anderson (#7) came in clutch defensively, leading the team with 12 digs on record for the match.

The Hornets fall 0-8 on the season, while Anna Maria improves 1-4. Lyndon will host another home match against Elms College at 6:30 pm tomorrow evening in the Stannard Gym.
