Second Half Goals Secure First Season Win for Men’s Soccer

The Lyndon men’s soccer team hosted Vermont Technical College yesterday afternoon for a non-conference game. At the time, neither team had a win on their record this early into the season. But it was the Hornets that broke this trend after scoring two goals in the second half.

The Hornets started the game aggressively. They maintained control for a majority of the first half, taking nine shots at Knight goalie Thomas Ferguson (#1). The Athletics Department cited Lyndon junior Patrick Osborn’s (#11) header as the best scoring opportunity, which bounced off the goalpost and continued into play.

Almost halfway through the second half of the game, Vermont Tech’s Ferguson was called on a foul after sliding at one of the attacking Hornets in the box. Osborn took the penalty kick for the Hornets, ultimately scoring the first goal of the game.

Coming off this momentum, the Hornets continued to inch their way up the field, eventually leading to another corner kick. Defenders moved into play as sophomore Jacob Baesemann (#7) took the corner for Lyndon, bouncing right in front of the goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jakob Cannon (#1/#28), who was playing in back at the time, then took his own shot, which rebounded to senior Hornet Koltin Leduc (#14), who put it past Ferguson for his first collegiate goal.

Leduc would make one last shot in the final minutes of the game before the timer ran out, setting Lyndon’s win in stone.

Over the course of the game, Hornet junior goalie Brett Roy (#99) recorded a flawless four saves out of the four shots from Vermont Tech, raising his career saves over the past two seasons to an impressive 163.

With this win, the Hornets improve 1-2-1 on the season. The men’s soccer team is scheduled to travel to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine this Saturday for a 1:00 pm North Atlantic Conference match-up.
