Fans returned to the Stannard Gym Wednesday night to cheer on the women’s volleyball team as they hosted their first home game of the season against Plymouth State University. Unfortunately, the Hornets left the court again that night without a win, falling 0-4 on the season.
The Plymouth Panthers quickly took advantage of the new and young team of Hornets, racking up points in the first set of the match, 4-0. However, Lyndon rallied with some incredible saves by sophomore Seairra Anderson (#7) to bring the ball into their control. The Hornets were able to score two points in the beginning but barely saw any ball control for the rest of the game, ending the first set 25-5.
The second set was also played in a majority favor of the visiting Panthers. It wasn’t until the score read 5-0 that the Hornets started to put points on the board. However, as the gap grew, Lyndon regained control of the ball after several ceiling hits, taking the Panthers by surprise. Despite the extra back and forth, the Hornets still could not gain long-term momentum and fell 25-8.
The final set began in the same fashion, with the Hornets struggling to volley behind the ball. But a surprise kill by Anderson put them back in play, 4-1. The Panthers were not expecting the Hornets to maintain this control as they were seen tripping over each other to get the ball, earning the home team another point. But a service error gave the ball back to Plymouth, who maintained control for most of the game, ending 25-6.
Over the match, sophomore Calysta Lohman (#9) secured two kills to get the Hornets on the board. She leads the team in season kills by an 11-point margin. Junior Victoria Valentine (#3) was recorded to have two assists during the night, and sophomore Charlotte Morris (#14) led with five digs.
The Hornets fall 0-4 on the season after this contest. Two games are scheduled for this evening as part of the Colby College Volleyball Tournament. NVU-Lyndon will travel to Waterville, Maine, to face off against Cazenovia College at 6:00 pm, followed by a contest against Mount Holyoke College at 8:00 pm.
